This is a tribute to the effervescent

Matthew Daniel Potel

Matt Potel With His 46'er Badge

We need your stories, pictures, and videos. Or if you have anything that Matt wrote that captures his spirit, that would be fantastic as well. Contribute anything that you think will honor Matt’s legacy.

Send your submissions to submissions@mattpotel.com

Either send images and videos as attachments or use a file sharing service, such as Mediafire, if the files are too large.

Matt suffered a fatal fall on September 30, 2011 while hiking with his college outing club in the Adirondack Mountains. He had recently turned 22. See the news articles for more detailed accounts.

Matt’s family has requested that those who wish to donate in Matt’s honor to support the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships for students to attend the Pok-O-MacCready camp in the Adirondacks. Matt was both a camper and counselor at this camp, and often spoke fondly of his times at camp in the ‘Daks.

Update Log:

12/13: A video of Matt’s 46′er finish is now up. Two newsletters from Matt’s synagogue are now posted in the memories section. One mentions his bar mitzvah and the other has a picture of him participating in a community service project. Website stats can be viewed here (over 1400 people have come to read about Matt!).

10/18: Several statements from the Binghamton University memorial service, which was held this past Friday, are now on the memories page. There is also a slideshow from the service on the videos page.

10/11: The first of the pictures are now up. The interface for the photo gallery is a bit clunky, but it’s as good as it gets. Added a few more videos and a funny new anecdote. Lots of pictures to sort through, but it’s coming along. I added a few more news stories that I missed as well.

10/8: The first of the memories have been posted. The pictures and videos are forthcoming. Much more yet to be uploaded. The links page, which contains links to articles and tributes to Matt around the web, should be pretty much complete. There is now a guestbook, as well as the option to comment on specific memories pages. If anything is missing, send a message to submissions@mattpotel.com.
